    The Maryland World Class Consortia kicks off its 2012 event calendar with our Quarterly Meeting on the morning of 23 February.

    Join us for excellent presentations full of useful examples and ideas for your organization's lean journey.  Hear news of the Consortia and its members, and network with other lean practitioners.

    Highlights of this quarter's meeting include:

    "Seven Weeks Thru the Office and One Week Thru the Shop? What Sense Does That Make?"

    Steven Brenneman, CEO and Founder of The Aluminum Trailer Company, describes his company's lean journey thus far.  Just a few years ago, ATC's situation was dire: 60% drop in sales, value streams clogged with waste, and financial and other results that brought the company to the brink of disaster.  Steve's presentation vividly describes how lean served as the centerpiece for a dramatic turnaround.  It is a discussion rich with lessons and dramatic examples for any lean practitioner!

    "Standardizing the Work of the Leader at Alcoa"

    Patrick Putorti, Senior Consultant for Alcoa's internal consulting group, will describe his company's groundbreaking applications of lean across more than 300 operating facilities around the globe.  Patrick will describe lessons learned from which everyone can learn. He will detail Alcoa's leader standard work, daily management, metrics boards, and more.  His materials are rich in photos, video, and personal stories of triumph and failure.

    "The MWCC and the Vision of World Class"

    In a brief presentation, Jeff Fuchs, Director of the Maryland World Class Consortia, will provide an overview of what "World Class" means for Consortia member companies and their people.  A clear, compelling, shared vision is what unites work groups, aligns actions, and energizes improvement.  How well does your future state description compel others toward the goal of world class operational excellence?

    In this one-hour webinar, learn how Training Within Industry (TWI) is used as a powerful method for knowledge capture, training, people development, and coaching!

    Training Within Industry was developed by the U.S. War Department in the 1940s, and was critical to building the skilled American workforce that became the "Arsenal of Democracy".  Students of lean understand how it later became an important cornerstone of the early Toyota Production System in post-WWII Japan.  But the story of TWI doesn't stop there.

    Much has been done to strengthen, refine, and apply TWI since the days of the Second World War.  Today, Training Within Industry is enjoying a resurgence of popularity.

    Join us for this exciting one-hour webinar to learn how TWI is used as a vehicle for development and coaching, and how it aligns with and supports every organization's continuous improvement efforts.

    Our presenter is Bryan Lund, Senior Director of Plant Operations at Revision Eyewear in Burlington, Vermont.  He has studied TWI extensively, launched The TWI Blog, and co-authored the TWI Job Instruction Training Implementation Manual.

    This one-day overview provides an introduction to lean tools and principles.  Attendees will learn the eight wastes, and the techniques that systematically reduce them in any organization.

    A simulation is included to enrich the learning experience, clearly demonstrating the differences between traditional and lean processing systems.  People who attend this seminar will understand the significant benefits that can be achieved by implementing lean throughout an organization.

    Typical results include:

    • 75% reduction in process lead time;
    • 40% productivity improvements;
    • 50% decline in quality problems;
    • 50% decrease in required work space;
    • 90% reduction in work-in-process.

    This seminar will benefit anyone, including both production and service operations.  No prior knowledge of lean is required.  The workshop is frequently used to provide a basic understanding of lean to members from all levels of an organization.

    The workshop will be presented by Drew LocherManaging Director for Change Management Associates (CMA). CMA provides lean enterprise consulting and organizational development services to industrial and service organizations representing a wide variety of industries including manufacturing, transportation, distribution, health care, education and financial services.  Mr. Locher's 2004 book The Complete Lean Enterprise - Value Stream Mapping for Administrative and Office Processes, was the recipient of a 2005 Shingo Prize for Manufacturing Excellence.
